Family eating seafood
Maryland crabs and oysters – delectable bounty of the Chesapeake Bay – are state icons. Enjoy them at seafood festivals around the bay this month. Head to Crisfield – an Eastern Shore town built on oyster shells – for the National Hard Crab Derby, Sept. 1-4. The 44th Maryland Seafood Festival – an Old Bay blend of music, arts & crafts, crustaceans and more – runs Sept. 10-11 at Sandy Point State Park (Annapolis). And, the Calvert County Watermen's Festival, Sept. 18 at Solomons Island, features a boat-docking contest for cash.
Maryland Wine Logo Raise a toast to new season
Enjoy wine, art and music at the Deep Creek Lake Art and Wine Festival, Sept. 10-12 in Western Maryland. Also on Sept. 10, country star George Jones headlines at the Cecil County Food and Wine Festival in Port Deposit Marina Park. Then, Sept. 17-18, It's the Maryland Wine Festival – the 28th annual outdoor extravaganza on the grounds of Carroll County’s Farm Museum in Westminster. And, Sept. 24, the Maryland Microbrewery Festival salutes local breweries at Union Mills Homestead, also in Carroll County. View more wine and brew events.
Ft. McHenry Star-Spangled heritage
In September 1814, citizens and militia repelled British forces during the War of 1812's pivotal Battle of Baltimore. Defenders’ Day at North Point, Sept. 4, is a traditional day of re-enactments at a waterside park in Baltimore County. Fort McHenry pays tribute with its signature Star-Spangled Banner Weekend, Sept. 9-11 – re-enactments, parades, concerts and fireworks. At Jefferson Patterson Park in Southern Maryland, re-enactors stage the Battle of St. Leonard Creek, Sept. 24.
Arts Festival Logo Arts festivals galore
Celebrate art at the beach: Labor Day Weekend Art & Craft Festival, Sept. 2-4 at the Ocean City Convention Center. Bel Air Festival for the Arts, Sept. 18, features 350 artisans and craftspeople. Dorchester Center for the Arts Showcase, Sept. 25 in Cambridge, is a free Eastern Shore street festival. View more arts festivals.
