'Mother of all roads'
Historic National Road — "the road that built the nation" — is a scenic byway that stretches from Baltimore through Western Maryland. It was the first federally funded road in the U.S. In honor of the byway's bicentennial anniversary, Cumberland hosts a weekend of events, May 6-8 (Mother's Day weekend). The National Pike Festival, May 20-22, celebrates a mode of travel along the byway that pre-dates bicycles. It features a wagon train across Washington County. |
