March is Women's History Month, an ideal time for springtime visits across the state and discovering more about notable women in Maryland history. A Maryland Women's Heritage Trail identifies more than 150 locations in the state where women have made unique contributions. One is the Baltimore Museum of Art , home of a prominent collection of modern art acquired by Baltimore's Cone sisters. Plenty of options to choose from in Maryland, a land of charm.

How sweet it is
Tap into the sweetness of spring. Learn about maple sugaring and have a taste. On March 6, take the Nature Walk at Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton for Maple Magic. That same day, Hashawha Environmental Center in Westminster has its annual day-long Maple Sugarin' Festival. And, March 19, another demonstration of maple-syrup making takes place at Swallow Falls State Park in Western Maryland.

Wild fun for the family
Come out of hibernation, March 12, at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge' s Eagle Festival. Just south of Cambridge on the Eastern Shore, Blackwater has one of the nation's largest populations of breeding bald eagles. It's often called “the Everglades of the North.” Also on March 12, National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel presents its annual Refuge Birthday Celebration. A week later, March 19, Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo opens for the season.

Maryland Day tributes
In March 1634, two English ships -- the Ark and the Dove -- sailed up the Chesapeake Bay, and landed at St. Clement's Island. The adventurers aboard established the colony of Maryland. Celebrate Maryland's birthday, March 25, at St. Clement's Island Museum. Other events are planned for March 25-27 in Historic St. Mary's City (site of the first settlement) and Four Rivers Heritage Area (Anne Arundel County), including a Taste of Four Rivers cookbook project.
